1909 OAKLAND MODEL 40 TOURING:

A major problem was discovered when the engine was disassembled.  The main portion of the flywheel where the Universal Joint couples to the flywheel was severely cracked and had been repaired (patched) several times.  Each repair seemingly made a bigger mess and was causing a MAJOR dynamic vibration in the engine.

Since a replacement flywheel was nonexistent, it was decided that John Swonger with Swonger Engineering in Johnson City, Tennessee would be called upon to build a new boot to sleeve the exterior crack.

Mr. Swonger profiled the flywheel using an AutoCad computer program, next he wrote a program for his CNC mill to trim the damaged area that was filled with weld, and then machined a boot out of block of steel measuring 5" wide x 8" long x 7" tall.  Mr. Swonger  machine the inside of the boot with a 1 degree taper, and placed the same profile on the exterior of the flywheel allowing for an interference fit.

Follow along on the pictures as the damaged area was repaired, and then the flywheel was fitted with a custom made ring gear by Dave Hentschel Automotive in Crete, IL in preparation for a 12 volt electric starter to be added.
